Data I/O Corporation to Showcase AzidoTM at ReConFig 2012 International Conference on ReConFigurable Computing and FPGAs

Azido demonstrates efficient reuse of intellectual property

REDMOND, Wash. – November 27, 2012 Data I/O Corporation (NASDAQ: DAIO), the leading provider of manual and automated device programming solutions, today announced Kent Gilson, Director of Technology, and Andy Caley, Sr. Software Engineer, will demonstrate Azido on Wednesday, December 5th at the ReConFig 2012 International Conference on ReConFigurable Computing and FPGAs. They will also present the paper “Isolation of Behavior Design from System Implementation” during a poster session on Friday, December 7th. The conference will be held at the Grand Park Royal Cancun Caribe Hotel in Cancun, Mexico and features leading industry and research experts in FPGA and High Performance Computing.

Traditionally applications written for FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) are written in text-based language such as Verilog or VHDL and are batch-processed creating a very long complex process to write, test and debug code. Azido is a system-level, graphical, object-oriented, parallel programming design tool that exponentially improves application productivity for FPGA designs. This approach allows designers to quickly test, debug and reuse software code that can run on different hardware platforms without rewriting software code.

"Azido's GUI abstracts away the hardware, making Azido applications both FPGA and board agnostic and inherently reusable. It's really a write once and use forever design tool,” said Dr. Peter Athanas,co-director of the Virgina Tech Configurable Computing Laboratory.

The paper, “Isolation of Behavior Design from System Implementation” identifies three inefficiencies in the work-flow for design of heterogeneous systems: the lack of hardware independence, the need to split execution among different systems, and the lack of tools to unify the design and execution phases. To address these inefficiencies, it proposes a framework for isolation of behavior from system implementation using Azido. Azido describes behavior in purely algorithmic form based on canonical primitives and uses a visual design language that allows development for different types of computational resources such as FPGAs, CPUs, and GPUs in a single environment.

“Azido is a powerful design tool delivering compelling benefits by significantly reducing the time it takes to design with an FPGA including the ability to reuse and repurpose intellectual property for new hardware,” stated Kent Gilson. “I am excited to showcase these benefits to leaders producing FPGAs and doing cutting edge research.”
